The desire to lead others, generally, but certainly not always, from a position of formal authority. It implies leading a team or a number of teams in ways, which build morale, generate team commitment, and harness energies and talents towards achieving a common goal. Encouraging considered risk-taking by removing fear of failure, approaching all results as opportunities to learn and develop. Encouraging self-management rather than "policing", showing trust and encouraging ownership by delegation of "controlling" and technical tasks. Uses delegation as an opportunity to stretch, develop, coach and support, giving responsibility and authority whilst retaining accountability. Uses a performance management system to ensure that everyone knows exactly what is expected of them, how they are performing and how they need to develop to fulfil their own goals and those of the organisation.
